The zodiac is a band of constellations along the Sun's apparent path across the sky, divided into twelve signs. The term comes from the Greek 'zodiakos kyklos', meaning 'circle of animals'. Astronomers recognize a thirteenth constellation, Ophiuchus, that the Sun also passes through.
