An asteroid is a rocky remnant left over from the early formation of the solar system, most orbiting in the belt between Mars and Jupiter. The word means 'star-like' in Greek, describing their pinpoint appearance in telescopes. The largest, Ceres, is also classified as a dwarf planet.
